National Biomechanics Day Awards
Our lab and department has won not one but TWO awards for our National Biomechanics Day efforts!
First of all, Stephanie and Maggie won the Biomechanics Art competition. Check out their awesome graphic:

Also, we won one of the 2018 Greatest Impact awards for our event in April. Congratulations to Nicholas, who put the entry together, and everyone who helped us to have a successful event. Check out the Facebook post to see the award announcement.
Maggie Presents her Research at the NC State Undergraduate Research Symposium (and wins an award!)
Maggie presented a poster on the rat forelimb unloading project that she and Sophie as working on at the Annual Undergraduate Research Symposium earlier today. She did a great job explaining the project’s motivation and initial results!
UPDATE: Maggie won an award for her poster! Sigma Xi, the Scientific Research Society, named it one of the outstanding presentations at this year’s Undergraduate Research Symposium. See the award announcement here.

Hui wins Best Oral Presentation Award
Dr. Hui Cong won the award for “Best Oral Presentation Award for the Materials Innovation Category” at the College of Textiles Research Open House held in Hunt Library on April 16th. Here are a few photos of her being presented this award by Dr. King and Dr. Rust.
Congratulations!

Abrams Scholar Winners
Congratulations to Carly, Sophie and Marci who all won the Abrams Scholar for 2017-2018!
About the Abrams Scholars Program:
Abrams Scholars are outstanding BME undergraduate students who are selected to receive a stipend to conduct hands-on laboratory research projects. These projects are conceived and designed by the students with the guidance of a faculty mentor. The Abrams Scholar program honors C. Frank Abrams, Jr., a BME and BAE emeritus faculty member. Dr. Abrams led the development of the first courses in Biomedical Engineering at NC State and was instrumental in the founding of NC State’s BME Department, the creation of the joint UNC-CH/NC State graduate program, and ultimatel,y the launch of the UNC-CH/NC State Joint BME Department. He was the Joint Department’s first senior design instructor as well as the first Director of Graduate Studies.
Welcome Marci – Abrams Scholar Winner
Marci is a sophomore who will be joining our lab as an Abrams Scholar for 2017-2018. Welcome Marci!

Carly, Michael, and Sophie all awarded research grants
Carly, Michael, and Sophie were all three were awarded NC State Undergraduate Research Grants from the Office of Undergraduate Research for 2017-2018. Congratulations all, we’re honored to have you in our lab!
Jacque Awarded Junior Faculty Research Award at ASB
At the annual American Society of Biomechanics conference, held in Boulder, Colorado August 8-11, Jacque was given the Junior Faculty Research Award. The JFRA is a grant that can be used to generate pilot data and support early-career investigators. There were nine applications this year that were each reviewed based on the significance of the problem, the scientific approach, and the impact of the project on the candidate’s research program.
Jacque’s award application is titled “Changes in the Osteovascular Niche Following Ischemic Stroke in Mice.”
Congratulations!

Jacque is pictured here with Paul DeVita, National Biomechanics Day founder and ASB member, receiving her award.
BME Department Wins NBD Student Competition
- North Carolina State/University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill (Stephanie Teeter): This group uploaded their demos to the ASB Teaching Repository, allowing others the opportunity to recreate them. The NC State/UNC team consisted of six independent laboratories who hosted unique demos covering a wide variety of topics in biomechanics and motor control, ranging from applications of material property testing in orthopedic care to the design of exoskeletons used to assist human locomotion. This group also hosted a scavenger hunt based on the demos to further engage the students. Overall, this event was an interactive and exciting showcase of biomechanics which introduced the students to biomechanics research and the impact it can have on the world!
Stephanie wins Award for Excellence at University Level
Many congratulations are in order for Stephanie, who was one of 12 nominees selected for the University Award for Excellence, which is the highest honor a non-faculty member can receive! Despite stiff competition, the committee recognized her outstanding contributions to the community. Now she goes on to compete for the Governor’s Awards for Excellence. Winners will be announced late this summer.
Per the website: “The NC State University Awards for Excellence recognize the notable contributions that are above and beyond an employee’s normal job responsibilities. These meritorious achievements or accomplishments should be so singularly outstanding that special recognition is justified.”
